Boone Hall

Last weekend there was a 4 car collision 200 yards south of the controlled traffic at Boone Hall that tied up the roadway for some time. The wreck was at 11:13 a.m. and immediately responded to by one of the officers working the Boone Hall event. Being a four-car collision, with two of the vehicles having to be towed, both lanes were blocked for a period of time while the collision was cleared. This disruption caused major delays but after a two hour period traffic flow was restored but heavy. To further improve our traffic safety efforts, the Mount Pleasant Police Department will stage additional resources in the area of Highway 17 near Boone Hall for this weekend’s events at Boone Hall. Officers and tow trucks will be staged north and south of Boone Hall on Highway 17 to quickly respond to a collision or incident that may cause traffic congestion. Additional officers will also be staged to monitor alternative routes such as Rifle Range Rd., Six Mile Rd., and Hamlin Rd. School is out Friday and we expect a large crowd depending on the weather. We ask that drivers use caution in all areas but especially on Highway 17 between Brickyard Plantation and Longpoint Rd. For those traveling Highway 17 southbound, if you are not attending Boone Hall, stay in the left two lanes to bypass the event. For those traveling Highway 17 northbound, if you are not attending the events, stay to the right to bypass the event. Please drive with due care and watch for traffic stopped in front of you. Suspicious Person

October 12, 2018 Update

Mount Pleasant, S.C. - The Mount Pleasant Police Department concluded the investigation into the suspicious activity case that occurred on October 6, 2018, on Highway 41 at Dunes West Blvd. Detectives determined that no criminal activity occurred.

Mount Pleasant, S.C. - On October 6, 2018, officers from the Mount Pleasant Police Department responded to a report of a suspicious person on Highway 41 at Dunes West Blvd. The complainant told officers that as children were crossing Highway 41, the subject asked if they wanted to “get in his truck because he had just bought a new bucket of gum.” The children, all 12 years old, ran away and informed their parents. Officers patrolled the area for the person and the U-Haul pickup truck he was driving but did not locate him.

On October 9, 2018, officers were called to Planters Pointe Blvd. In reference to a parent locating the truck. Officers met with the subject who stated that he was working at a home in the area as a plumber. Officers confirmed this information and inquired about the incident that occurred on October 6^th. The subject told officers that he saw the children skateboarding and stopped to comment on their skateboarding skills. He further told officers that he did offer them gum but denied trying to lure them into the truck.

The Mount Pleasant Police Department takes these types of allegations seriously. Our Criminal Investigations Bureau continues to investigate this incident and an update will be provided as information becomes available.

Shots Fired Call

 

 

 

 

Mount Pleasant, SC – On August 18, 2017, at approximately 10:30 a.m., officers from the Mount Pleasant Police Department responded to Snowden Road in reference to shots fired. A victim was not located but witnesses described a dark in color Honda Accord with a spoiler as the suspect’s vehicle. Belle Hall Elementary School was placed on lockdown while officers searched for the suspect. The suspect was not located and the lockdown has since been lifted.

Mount Pleasant, SC – The Mount Pleasant Police Department responded to the Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital this morning in reference to a suspicious activity call. A complainant alleged that there was a person with a gun on the hospital campus so the hospital went on lockdown. Officers thoroughly searched the area and found no one with a weapon. Officers cleared the scene at 7:12am.

DHEC warning concerning floodwater dangers

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Saturday, October 3, 2015, 4:30 p.m.) – South Carolinas are cautioned about wading or playing in floodwaters resulting from the heavy rainfall in the state.

“We strongly warn residents to stay away from floodwaters and, to reduce the risk of infections and traumatic injuries including drowning, don’t swim, play or boat in the water,” said Jamie Blair, deputy director of the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control’s Office of Public Health Preparedness. “Water from flooding can carry viruses, bacteria, chemicals and other physical items picked up as it moves through storm water systems, across industrial sites, yards, roads and parking lots. These threats can cause serious illness and injury and should be avoided if at all possible.”

Blair offered specific tips for preventing illness and injury resulting from flooding, including:

• Prevent children from playing in flooded areas. Rapidly rushing floodwaters pose a high risk for drowning.
• Keep children from playing with toys that have been contaminated by floodwater until the toys can be cleaned/disinfected.
• Wash children's hands frequently and always before meals.
• Take care to protect open wounds from floodwaters.

Blair says flooding can also create situations in which animals, reptiles and insects can be more likely to come in contact with humans, resulting in bites and stings. If you have a reason that you must enter the floodwaters, be alert and try to avoid coming into contact.

Mount Pleasant, SC – On October 1, 2015 at 3:59pm the Mount Pleasant Police Department responded to a three car collision on Coleman Boulevard at Mill Street. A vehicle was heading south on Coleman Blvd. when it struck a vehicle waiting to turn left onto Mill St.  The same vehicle that struck the first car then continued through the intersection and struck another vehicle head on that was heading north on Coleman Blvd. One person was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.

Officers Save Man During a Traffic Stop

 

 

On April 5, 2015 FTO Neese received a call from a friend about an erratic driver. He was able to catch up with the driver, who turned out to be Mr. Orange. After some difficulty getting Mr. Orange to realize he was being signaled to stop, FTO Neese and Cpl. Santos determined that he was not intoxicated, but rather was medically impaired. It took some convincing, but Mr. Orange agreed to go with EMS to the hospital. It was later relayed to Mr. Orange by his doctors that the actions of the officers involved, to include stressing the need for him to receive medical attention quickly, likely saved his life. Mr. Orange recently came by the police department to thank FTO Neese and Cpl. Santos for their quick actions.

Officer Saves Man From Burning Vehicle

 

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Officer rescues man from burning car on Pitt Street near King Street.   Pfc. Amber Simmons responded to Pitt Street near King Street on June 7, 2015 at approximately 12:15am and found a vehicle engulfed in flames. Pfc. Simmons observed a man partially out of the vehicle while another female was trying to get him out. Without regard for her own safety Pfc. Simmons ran to the car and assisted the witness in moving the man to safety.  Pfc. Simmons’ quick actions saved the man from serious injury and possible death.       The camera initiates after the man was pulled to safety.

Body Worn Cameras Purchased

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – The Mount Pleasant Police Department has purchased 150 Vievu LE3 cameras to equip every police officer with body worn cameras.   150 Vievu LE3 cameras were delivered on Friday June 5, 2015 to the Mount Pleasant Police Department. Each officer will be assigned a body camera as part of their issued duty equipment. “We feel that having a camera on every officer will be beneficial to our department and the community as a whole,” says Inspector Chip Googe. “The Vievu camera will help strengthen cases for prosecution as well as show the officers’ and  suspects’ actions during critical incidents.” Inspector Googe points out that body cameras will not be a fix for every situation but will provide more pieces of information about an incident. Inspector Googe states that they have had a policy for body worn cameras since February of 2014. The Bicycle Patrol and K-9 Units have been wearing body worn cameras since that time.   “The Mount Pleasant Police Department enjoys a strong relationship with our community,” says Chief Carl Ritchie. “Our philosophy has always embraced the community policing concept. This is one more step that strengthens the mutual trust we have with our citizens and offers another layer of transparency to the community we serve.” Chief Ritchie further states that this tool will help show more of the good deeds that officers already do while out on patrol. The recent car fire at Vickery’s where Cpl. Willis is seen pulling a man to   safety is a good example of this. The in car camera captured this incident but had it occurred outside of its view the body worn camera would have provided the details.   “I would like to congratulate the Mount Pleasant Police Department for its proactive stance on the use of body cameras,” say Mayor Linda Page. “We are now the first   municipality in South Carolina able to outfit every police officer with a body camera. Our police department is already heavily integrated within the fabric of the community with a wide array of youth programs and community engagement initiatives. We welcome the body cameras as another tool to promote our core values of professional excellence, trust, honesty and transparency, fairness, respect and accountability.”   Four supervisors will attend a train the trainer class provided by Vievu on June 11th. This training will allow them to teach all other officers in the proper use of the body worn cameras. The current system used to store video from car mounted cameras will also be used to house videos from the body worn cameras. The cameras are expected to roll out on June 26th, 2015.   Chief Ritchie would also like to thank Town Administrator Eric DeMoura, Mayor Linda Page and all of Town Council for funding all of the body cameras. Their support of this program is immeasurable.

Officer Saves Man from Burning Car

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Officer rescues man from burning car in the parking lot of Vickery’s on Shem Creek.   Corporal Adam Willis responded to the parking lot of Vickery’s on May 30, 2015 at approximately 4:35am and found a vehicle engulfed in flames. Corporal Willis retrieved his fire extinguisher and began clearing the passenger compartment of flames when he  observed a man sitting in the driver’s seat. He was then able to pull the man from the car and escorted him to safety.  Corporal Willis’ quick actions saved the man from serious  injury and possible death.

Fatal Traffic Collision

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – The Mount Pleasant Police Department responded to a motorcycle collision on South Morgans Point near the KOA Campground at approximately 9:41pm on May 28th, 2015. The motorcycle was heading north when it went off of the roadway and struck a tree. The driver of the motorcycle suffered fatal injuries. The incident is still under investigation by the Traffic Bureau.

Palmetto State Armory Donates Rifles

 

 

 

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Palmetto State Armory donates four AR-10 rifles to The Mount Pleasant Police Department’s Special Weapons and Tactics Unit.   These PSA AR-10s will serve as replacements for the department’s current Remington 700  .308 platforms that are used by their marksmen/observers. The AR-10s are precision long  range rifles that are also chambered to the same .308 caliber as the current rifles.   The police department would like to thank Palmetto State Armory for their donation! Their generosity saved the Town of Mount Pleasant from having to purchase replacement rifles for the aging current models.



Car Break-In Suspects Arrested

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – The Mount Pleasant Police Department arrested four suspects for breaking into motor vehicles and for financial transaction card fraud.   Investigators have arrested and charged Deon Rambert, Montez Phillips-Edgecombe, Lashanta Singleton and Jasmine Lafayette with Breaking and Entering into a Motor Vehicle that occurred April 28th at Eco Fitness on Johnnie Dodds Blvd. In conjunction   with this incident Deon Rambert has also been charged with Financial Transaction Card Theft and Financial Transaction Card Fraud. Mr. Phillips-Edgecombe, Ms. Singleton and Ms. Lafayette have additionally been charged with Financial Transaction Card Fraud which stems from this same incident. Their bond hearings are scheduled for 2:00pm on  May 14, 2015.   The investigation is still ongoing and additional charges are expected.

Mount Pleasant Officer Honored After Saving a Life



On the evening of April 22nd at about 6 p.m. Officer Darren Raley was just getting home after his 10 hour shift. As he exited his car he heard someone screaming for help several houses down. Officer Raley without hesitation ran to where the calls for help were coming from and found that his neighbor’s father had collapsed in the trunk of his car, was not breathing or responsive. Officer Raley instructed other bystanders to help him remove the victim from the trunk of the car and he immediately began administering lifesaving attention to his neighbor’s father. We received a call from the victim's daughter on April 28th praising Officer Raley’s heroic efforts when no one else would stop and help. She said without Officers Raley’s immediate response her father would have died in the trunk of the car.

Request for Information

On April 28, 2015, a victim reported that her vehicle was broken into while it was parked in the parking lot of ECO Fitness at 627 Johnnie Dodd’s Blvd in the East Cooper Plaza.  The victim in this case had her purse stolen which contained several credit cards and other financial documents.  Shortly after the car break in, a group of unknown individuals began using the victim’s credit cards.  Detectives from the Mount Pleasant Police Department have secured video from one of the businesses and are currently attempting to identify the following three subjects.  The individual in the first photo actually was successful at making a charge with the victim’s credit card.  The other two individuals attempted to use the victim’s credit cards however they were unsuccessful when the sale was denied by store staff because the individuals claimed not to have any identification as the back of the credit card had not been signed.  If you are able to identify the pictured individuals please contact the Mount Pleasant Police Department Criminal Investigations Bureau at 843-884-4176.
