Coleman Boulevard at Pherigo Street/Vincent Drive Traffic Signal – Flash Mode

New Traffic Signal Turn On

Thursday Evening, October 24th

The Town of Mount Pleasant’s Transportation Department will place the new traffic signal at the intersection of Coleman Boulevard and Pherigo Street/Vincent Drive into flash mode. The Coleman Boulevard approaches will flash yellow for caution while the Pherigo Street and Vincent Drive approaches will flash red and drivers must come to a complete stop. Pending observations, the signal will be placed in full phase operation on Monday, October 28th at 10:00am.

Please use extra caution during this change in the traffic pattern.

Weekend Traffic Alert

This Friday, Saturday, and Sunday the Strawberry Festival will take place at Boone Hall Plantation. You can expect heavy traffic on Highway 17 and Longpoint Road around Boone Hall Plantation during this event. The right lane southbound on Highway 17 in front of Boone Hall will be used for event traffic only. We will have officers on traffic control points but it is suggested that you use alternate routes if possible.

This Sunday is also the 32nd Annual Blessing of the Fleet & Seafood Festival at Memorial Waterfront Park. This event is scheduled to run from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Traffic may also be heavy in this area. To learn more about this event, visit http://www.tompsc.com/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=2105. 

Road Closure Announced in Park West

Beginning Friday, Jan. 11 the connection between the Center Park South development and the existing Foxmoor neighborhood via John Bartram Place will be closed to vehicular traffic. This closure will remain in effect until the widening of Park West Boulevard is completed in late 2020.

During this time, pedestrian access will be maintained between the two neighborhoods.

Longpoint Road Closure

At 9:00 a.m. today, Public Services will begin clearing the ditches along Longpoint Rd. This is a proactive action to help prevent flooding on Longpoint Rd. before heavy rains arrive this afternoon. The hope is this will only take about 2 hours. Due to this, traffic will be diverted through the Snowden community. The diversion will be at Whipple Rd. and at Snowden Rd. If possible, please use Hwy 17 and/or I-526 as alternate routes. If you do use Longpoint Rd., please use caution and reduce speeds as you drive through the Snowden community! We will update the road closure through our social media channels.

New Traffic Pattern on Coleman Blvd.

New Traffic Pattern
Starting on October 17th

Stage 1 construction on the westbound side (toward the Ravenel Bridge) of Coleman Boulevard is nearing completion. Stage 2 construction of the eastbound side (toward Sullivan Island) will be starting on October 17th. This will require the installation of a new traffic pattern that will take at least two nights to complete. This work will take place at night between the hours of 9:00 pm and 6:00 am.

The Contractor will be changing the traffic pattern to the opposite side of Coleman Boulevard on Wednesday, October 17th between the intersection of Fairmont Avenue/Shem Drive to Simmons Street. On Thursday, October 18th the lane shift will be changed between Simmons Street and Mill Street.

The lane shift will require the removal of the existing traffic lane markings and new traffic lane markings installed.

The far right east-bound straight/right turn lane coming off the Shem Creek Bridge on Coleman Boulevard to Mill Street during Stage2 construction will be changed to right turn only during this phase of construction. Access to Wilden Street will be from the right thru traffic lane.

Please use extra caution during this change of the traffic pattern.

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (October 13, 2017) - The Town of Mount Pleasant will be installing storm drainage across Coleman Boulevard beginning Sunday, October 15, between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. There will be lane shifts between Mill Street and Live Oak Drive as well as in the vicinity of Moultrie Plaza.

The driving public should use extra caution in these areas.

Starting on Wednesday, 1/11/17 through Friday, 1/13/17 SCE&G will be performing maintenance work on their service lines at 920 Johnnie Dodds Boulevard Frontage Road located slightly south of the Chick-fil-A restaurant.  This work will take place from 8:30 am until 3:00 pm and require a lane closure.

Fatal Traffic Collision

December 14, 2016 Update:

 

Investigators have charged Joseph Granger of Hampton, Virginia with Felony Driving Under the Influence in this case. Mr. Granger was driving the vehicle that pulled in front of the motorcycle on the Isle of Palms Connector. Once he is discharged from MUSC he will be transported to the Charleston County Detention Center.

On 12/11/2016, at approximately 4:08 p.m., officers from the Mount Pleasant Police Department responded to the Isle of Palms Connector and Riviera Drive in reference to a collision. A motorcycle was heading towards the Isle of Palms on the connector when a vehicle turned left off of Riviera Drive into the path of the motorcycle and was struck by the motorcycle in the area of the driver’s door. The motorcycle driver was pronounced dead on the scene and the driver of the vehicle was transported to MUSC. This collision is still under investigation.

Lane Shifts on I-526 Westbound at the Wando River Scheduled for

Monday Evening, December 5

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) will shift the westbound lanes of I-526 at the Wando River on Monday evening, December 5, 2016. The shifts are required to provide safe access for workers, materials and equipment for repairs on the Wando River Bridge. Two westbound lanes will remain available during this project.

SCDOT Deputy Secretary for Engineering Leland Colvin said crews will replace a damaged cable that was discovered during a routine inspection. "The cables used in this bridge design are located beneath the deck. A single damaged cable does not compromise the integrity of the bridge and it remains safe for travel," said Colvin.

The project schedule anticipates completion by early March of 2017, weather permitting. The lane shift will be in place until the work is completed.

SCDOT urges motorists to use caution when approaching, moving through and leaving the work zone.

Highway 41 and Harpers Ferry Way Intersection

 

Three Oaks Contractors, Inc. will be replacing the curb and reestablishing the shoulder at the entrance of Harpers Ferry Way from Highway 41 on Thursday, 9/22 and Friday, 9/23.  The west bound turn lane from Highway 41 onto Harpers Ferry Way will be closed while this work is being done.  All other lanes will remain open and traffic will be able to turn onto Harpers Ferry from the through traffic lane.

The driving public should use extra caution while driving in this construction zone.

Longpoint Road is being detoured into the Snowden Community while the SCDOT works on drainage issues. If at all possible, try to avoid using Longpoint Rd. between Coaxum Rd. and Snowden Rd. This work will continue each weekday from 9am-2pm until June 17th.

If you must travel this way, please remember that the speed limit is 25mph within the Snowden Community.

HDR|ICA announces a temporary closure of one the right lane(s) of traffic on the West bound James B. Edwards Bridge, over the Wando River on I-526. The work will include closure of the Westbound Right lane(s) on the dates listed below:

- West Bound Lanes – Monday, June 13th through Thursday, June 16th from 9:00pm to 5:00am

The temporary lane closures are necessary for performing routine maintenance on the James B. Edwards Bridge. If further lane restrictions or weather forces changes, the public will be notified.

Barricades, cones, signs and flashing arrows will be utilized for the Work Zone and signs will identify the closure. The public is asked to exercise caution while driving through the area. On June 6th the South Carolina Department of Transportation will begin drainage work on Longpoint Rd. between Coaxum and Snowden Rd. The work is scheduled to go through June 17th. Between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., local traffic will be routed into Snowden and thru traffic will use Whipple Road, I-526, and/or US-17.

Crews will be paving at the intersection of Park West Boulevard and Bessemer Road on Saturday, May 21, 2016 from 7:00 am until 5:00 pm.  This paving operation will cause delays.  The Public may want to seek alternate routes during these hours.  Should there be a rain delay this operation will take place on Monday, May 23.

There will be a NEW traffic pattern as follows:

New Speed Limit will be 20 MPH.

Traffic on Park West Boulevard from both directions will have Yield Signs.

Traffic on Bessemer Road continues to have a Stop Sign.

Please use extra caution while driving in this construction zone.

Traffic Collision

 

 

 

 

 

Mount Pleasant, SC – On November 23, 2015 at approximately 1:08pm the Mount Pleasant Police Department responded to an automobile versus a pedestrian collision on Hwy 17 at Anna Knapp Boulevard.  The vehicle was heading northbound on Hwy 17 when a pedestrian walked out into traffic. The pedestrian was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The investigation is ongoing.  



Halloween Safety Tips

With Halloween coming up Saturday we wanted to give you a few tips to help keep you and

your children safe while trick or treating:

Walk Safely

*Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks. Look left, right and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross.

*Put electronic devices down and keep heads up and walk, don’t run, across the street.

*Teach children to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them.

*Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible. Children should walk on direct routes with the fewest street crossings.

*Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Teach children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.

*Trick or treat with an adult.

*Children under the age of 12 should not be alone at night without adult supervision. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, they should stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in groups.

Keep Costumes Both Creative and Safe

*Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light 

colors.

*Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a 

child’s vision.

*Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.

*When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls.

Drive Extra Safely on Halloween

*Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods.

*Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.

*Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs.

*Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully.

*Eliminate any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your 

surroundings.

*Drive slowly, anticipate heavy pedestrian traffic and turn your headlights on earlier in the

 day to spot children from greater distances.

*Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. so be especially alert for kids 

during those hours.
