Yesterday the 9th Circuit Law Enforcement Network kicked off their Sober or Slammer campaign. Officers throughout the Lowcountry are looking to take impaired drivers off of the roadways of South Carolina! We urge you to use a designated driver, call a taxi, or use a ride-hailing service if you intend to drink this holiday season! We want you to enjoy the holidays and #ArriveAlive!

Don’t Fumble: Tackle Drunk Driving Before the Clock Starts

 

Kickoff is right around the corner and for many football fans, when it’s time for Super Bowl LII, everyone’s a fan…and Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk.

Officers with the Mount Pleasant Police Department are huddling up with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for a special Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk reminder to urge football fans across the nation not to drop the ball on this issue.

Drunk driving can be deadly, and even small amounts of alcohol can impair judgement to make driving unsafe. In 2016, there were 10,497 alcohol-involved motor vehicle fatalities. Among those, 67 percent (7,052) involved at least one driver with a BAC of .15, almost twice the legal limit.

Make the perfect play if you’ve had too much to drink - call a friend, call a taxi, or consider using a local rideshare program to get you and everyone else home safely!"



Felony Driving Under the Influence Arrest

Mount Pleasant, SC – On June 14, 2017, at approximately 2:06 a.m., officers from the Mount Pleasant Police Department responded to Highway 17 southbound at Ira Road in reference to a collision. A 4-door sedan was stopped at the red light on Highway 17 in front of Wando Crossing when a sport utility vehicle, also heading south, struck the rear of the sedan. The driver of the sport utility vehicle, Charlton R. Griffith of Charleston, was arrested and charged with Felony Driving Under the Influence. He was lodged at the Charleston County Detention Center. The driver of the sedan died as a result of the injuries sustained.

This collision is still under investigation.

Felony DUI

 

 

Mount Pleasant, SC – On January 7, 2016, at approximately 8:04 p.m., officers from the Mount Pleasant Police Department responded to Highway 17 and Mathis Ferry Road in reference to a collision. The preliminary investigation reveals that a Jeep Sport Utility Vehicle, driven by Robert Leland, was heading south on Highway 17 when he disregarded a red light. Robert Leland struck a 4 door Mercedes who was turning left onto Highway 17 from Mathis Ferry Road. Robert Leland was found to be under the influence and arrested for 2 counts of Felony DUI. The driver and passenger of the Mercedes were transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. The investigation is ongoing.

In 2015, 840 people lost their lives in drunk-driving-related crashes in the month of December alone. Of these crashes, twenty-eight percent involved a driver with a BAC of .08 or higher.

If you will be drinking, plan on not driving. Plan your safe ride home before you start New Year’s Eve celebrations. Designate a sober driver ahead of time.

 

If someone you know has been drinking, do not let that person get behind the wheel. Take their keys, take them home, or help them arrange a sober ride. 

 

If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact local law enforcement by dialing 911. Your actions could help save someone’s life.

 

The Mount Pleasant Police Department’s Traffic Bureau will be conducting traffic safety checkpoints during the evening of December 30, 2016 in the areas of Highway 41, Isle of Palms Connector, and Hungryneck Blvd. We encourage everyone to be safe and make smart decisions in their celebrations.

The Mount Pleasant Police Department is Cracking Down on Drunk Driving this July 4th

Mount Pleasant, SC – The Fourth of July holiday is a favorite time of year for many Americans. Backyard parties, good food, and fireworks. But the celebrating unfortunately turns deadly when people drive after drinking alcohol.  Drunk driving is a preventable problem on Independence Day each year in the United States.

• In 2013, Forbes magazine named the Independence Day holiday “the most dangerous holiday of the year.”
• This year, the Fourth comes on a Saturday, so Friday, July 3, is the Federal holiday and observance. That means the Fourth of July weekend starts at 6 p.m. Thursday and extends to 5:59 a.m. Monday morning, July 6.
• In 2013, there were 512 people killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes over the Fourth of July holiday (6 p.m. July 3rd through 5:59 a.m. July 8th). Of those fatalities, 199 (39%) occurred in crashes that involved at least one driver or motorcycle operator with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 grams per deciliter or higher.
• During the July Fourth holiday period in 2013, the rate of alcohol impairment among drivers involved in fatal crashes was over three times higher at night than during the day.
• Unfortunately, these enforcement campaigns are necessary—drunk driving is an epidemic in our nation. In 2013, there were 10,076 people killed in drunk-driving crashes. That’s almost one third of all traffic fatalities nationwide.
