Mount Pleasant, SC – On June 14, 2017, at approximately 2:06
a.m., officers from the Mount Pleasant Police Department responded to Highway
17 southbound at Ira Road in reference to a collision. A 4-door sedan was
stopped at the red light on Highway 17 in front of Wando Crossing when a sport
utility vehicle, also heading south, struck the rear of the sedan. The driver
of the sport utility vehicle, Charlton R. Griffith of Charleston, was arrested
and charged with Felony Driving Under the Influence. He was lodged at the
Charleston County Detention Center. The driver of the sedan died as a result of
the injuries sustained.
This collision is still under investigation.
