Beards are IN!

As No Shave November and Don’t Shave December comes to an end tonight at midnight don’t be surprised if you still see beards on Mount Pleasant Police Officers in the New Year. This past November officers were given the option to grow their beards for a donation to the American Cancer Society and the response and donations were overwhelming. There has been nationwide discussion lately about whether Police Officers should be allowed to wear beards with many agencies updating t heir policies to allow it according to Chief Ritchie. “I don’t believe anyone who calls the police for help cares whether the responding officer has a beard or not.,” said Chief Ritchie. “Our appearance in uniform may have changed, but our professionalism and dedication to our community has not. The women and men of the Mount Pleasant Police Department do extraordinary things in our Town every day, and our commitment to the highest quality of policing will never change.” When I decided to make the change an

Barricaded Subject

Image
Mount Pleasant, S.C. - On November 4, 2019, officers from the Mount Pleasant Police Department were called to assist the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office to help look for a subject who had made threats. Mount Pleasant officers located the suspect at Wando Crossing near TJ Maxx. The suspect was given commands to get out of his vehicle but refused to do so. Due to his non-compliance, the Mount Pleasant Police Department SWAT team and negotiators were called to the scene. Negotiators continued to try and talk the man into exiting his vehicle but he continued to refuse while waving a knife and scissors. The SWAT team deployed gas munitions into the vehicle and the suspect then came out where he was taken into custody by a K-9 unit and SWAT team members. The suspect was transferred to the custody of the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.    The Mount Pleasant Police Department wants to thank the community for their patience as we handled this situation!

Scam Alert

Image
We have another variation on the scam theme! This time a victim was called and told that her Apple ID had been compromised. The telephone number that the scammer called from was spoofed to show a real number that is used by Apple Tech Support. The victim was then sent an email with a link to click on. Once the victim clicked on this link, the scammer had complete access to their computer. The scammer told the victim that her bank and credit card accounts had also been compromised along with the victim's mother's account. The victim was told that 72 hackers from Russia were compromising the accounts and the only way to secure the accounts was to pay in various gift cards. The scammer told the victim that after she gave the number for the gift cards, her accounts would be secured and any IPs that were tracking her would be blocked. She was also told that any money given would be refunded to her after the accounts were secured. This was not the case and the victim is now

The Dangers of Public Wi-Fi

Image
Recently, one of our citizens became a victim of a cybercriminal who was able to gain access into their bank account and scam them out of several thousand dollars. One of the ways this can happen is when you use public Wi-Fi "hotspots". This seems like an innocent, everyday activity but it becomes risky when you log into sites like your bank or your email. Man in the Middle One of the most common attacks is a called "man in the middle". This is where an attacker gets between the data sent from your computer to your service/website and intercepts (reads) it. Malicious Hotspots This is where rogue access points are set up to look like a real access point. These access points will look legitimate but now cybercriminals can view your sensitive information. Malware Distribution There may be weaknesses in software that allows cybercriminals to insert malware onto your system without you being aware. These are just a few of the dangers one could face whe
