MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (March 9, 2018) – Mount Pleasant Mayor Will Haynie and Mount Pleasant Town Council today announced their decision to enhance the School Resource Officer Program currently implemented in Mount Pleasant schools. Beginning on Monday, an additional nine school resource officers will be assigned to all Mount Pleasant public elementary schools.
“I would like to thank Mount Pleasant Town Council for supporting these security enhancement steps. Our sworn law enforcement officers provide critical school-based security and crime prevention services. They oversee law enforcement on campus, counsel students and provide regular safety training and instruction. They can switch from mentor to tactical officer in a moment,” said Mayor Haynie. “We currently have eight school resource officers assigned to our schools. This number will more than double on Monday when nine officers will be assigned to each of our elementary schools.”
"I want to thank the Mayor and Town Council for supporting the department’s vision to bolster our school security resources. The extra officers will enhance our already strong School Resource Officer Program by increasing our presence within all schools in our community," said Mount Pleasant Police Chief Carl Ritchie.
Charleston County School Board Members Kate Darby and Chris Staubes supported the decision in a joint statement: “The Town of Mount Pleasant and the Charleston County School District have long enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship for the good of our students, teachers and citizens. We welcome the Town’s decision to provide trained school resource officers at every Mount Pleasant elementary school and believe it will go a long way towards ensuring our shared goal of providing a safe and secure learning environment for all children,” they said.
