                                                         Scams for Missed Jury Duty

Mount Pleasant, SC—The Mount Pleasant Police Department has received an increase in reported bitcoin scams. These scams happen by phone, and the caller impersonates a police officer. The caller says that the victim did not show up for jury duty and that there is a warrant for their arrest unless money is sent by gift cards or digital currency. 

We ask the public not to send money to someone they do not know or to someone trying to extort money in this way. If you feel you have been a victim, please contact the Mount Pleasant Police Department to file a report at 843-884-4176. If you are contacted by someone asking for bitcoins or impersonating a police officer, please file a police report with the Mount Pleasant Police Department before proceeding.

One Killed In Motorcycle Vs Vehicle Collision

 

 

Mount Pleasant, SC – The Mount Pleasant Police Department responded to the area of HWY 17 N and Lexington Drive on November 30, 2024, in reference to a collision involving a motorcycle vs vehicle. The driver of the motorcycle was pronounced deceased at the scene.

This collision is still being investigated by the Mount Pleasant Police Department Traffic Division. The Charleston County Coroner’s Office will be releasing the name of the deceased.

Community Outreach Award

As an executive leader within this organization, this Captain leads from the front when it comes to community outreach. A few of the community events that he has overseen are Shop with a Cop, Overdose Awareness Day, Toys for Tots, etc. Not only does he expect other leaders under his span of control to embrace the community police model, but he lives it every day. For this, Captain Carter is receiving the Community Outreach Award.

This officer always has a positive attitude when working within the community. Always going above and beyond to ensure that events are a great success. This officer has participated in the Special Olympics and most recently Shop with a Cop. Her positive attitude paired with her dedication to the community puts a positive lens on the department as well as builds a stronger working relationship with the community. For this, SPO Kopp is receiving the Community Outreach Award.

Two officers together have become mentors to the Mount Pleasant Police Department Explorer Post. They often give up their off duty time to help train and teach those that are interested in the Law Enforcement path. From assisting with the Summer SCALE Competition to teaching SWAT Principles, PFC Hill and CPL Bayles has proved to have a positive impact on the future generations of law enforcement. For these reasons, PFC Hill and CPL Bayles are receiving the Community Outreach Award.

Guardian Award

On December 17, 2023, our town was hit by an enormous storm front that caused massive flooding. After receiving a 911 call about an elderly female that was trapped in her vehicle after being submerged in a retention pond, two of our officers responded. Their instant decision to swim out at their own peril to save a citizen of this town exemplifies exactly what our mission statement says. For their actions, SGT Stafford and PFC Byrne are receiving the Guardian Award.

Civilian of the Year

Wearing different hats during a shift, these four individuals have proven themselves this year as hard workers and a great benefit to the department. From directing traffic at school, towing trailers, assisting with the explorer program, they have grown over the last year and continue to look for opportunities to serve. For these reasons, all Community Service Officers are receiving the Civilian of the Year Award- Cole Googe, Matthew Iannuzzi, William McMullen and John Walter.

Rookie of the Year

This officers thirst for knowledge is apparent. When he isn’t working patrol, he is seen assisting with the Explorers Program, Honor Guard, involved with the K9 unit and most recently showed interest in SWAT. He is a recent recipient of the Bronze Hero Award from South Carolina Department of Public Safety. As a new officer, he has clearly set himself apart from the rest and is often looked upon as a leader. For these reasons, Patrol Officer Trent Hill is Rookie of the Year.

 

School Resource Officer of the Year

This officer continues to take the initiative to further his knowledge by taking numerous courses for certifications. He is typically the first to volunteer, even when the assignments are less than desirable. Aside from his daily routine, this SRO volunteered to manage the Criminal Justice Club within his school where he coordinates with the specialized units to educate the students. For these reasons, School Resource Officer Kane is receiving the SRO Of the Year Award

Investigator of the Year

This investigator makes managing work and home life look too easy. While assisting with the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office Internet Crimes Against Children, she’s also able to balance keeping her regular cases up to date and her home life as her husband works for the United States Coast Guard. She has a positive attitude and is always willing to help those around her. She recently received the second highest award for investigators from the Unites States Secret Service, The Directors Award. For these reasons, Detective Desiree Schnackenberg is Investigator of the Year.

Traffic Officer of the Year

Although assigned to the Traffic Unit, this officer exemplifies how a well-rounded officer should look like. Maintain her regular traffic responsibilities, she also is part of the CIRT and Drone Team. She has helped with multiple community events such as Shop with a Cop, Toys for Tots as well as being a vital asset to helping teach at the Charleston Southern University. When she’s out of uniform, she serves in a different way by participating in the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk, Autism Awareness Walk, school supply drives and even knitting blankets for preemie babies in the NICU. For these reasons, Patrol Officer Michaela Capers is Traffic Officer of the Year.

Police Officer of the Year

In 2023, Mount Pleasant Police Department was recognized by other agencies for our quick transition from Glock 40 to 9 mm. This was able to be accomplished by the help of this officer coordinating specifically with Glock, setting up and instructing range days and reaching out to multiple contacts to trade ammo. Additionally, this officer’s ensures that all precertified officers are prepared for their cumulative at the academy and oversees the drone team which is a vital tool used to help the public. For these reasons, Field Training Officer David Triana is Officer of the Year.

Supervisor of the Year

While newest of the supervisors, this supervisor’s maturity and growth over the last year was seen throughout the department. Managing the Athletics Committee paired with the responsibilities of being a team leader is always challenging, however he never failed to constantly encourage his team to stay motivated and hungry for improvement. For these reasons, Sergeant Charles Stafford is Supervisor of the Year.

Armed Robbery/Shoplifting/ Resisting Arrest and Assault on a Police Officer

Mount Pleasant, SC – On October 22, 2022, officers of the Mount Pleasant Police Department responded to the CVS located at 640 Long Point Road in reference to a robbery in progress. Upon arrival, officers located a subject matching the description given by the victim. Officers pursued the suspect on foot and affected an arrest on Jamal Evan Frazier age 35. He is charged with one count of armed robbery, shoplifting, and assault while resisting arrest.

Mount Pleasant, SC – On October 21, 2023, officers of the Mount Pleasant Police Department responded to the area of Bridge Side Apartments in reference to suspicious persons complaint. Upon arrival officers were able to locate and arrest the following persons for the following offenses:

Karriem Mayweather age 18 is charged with Possession of a Stolen Vehicle and Breaking into Motor Vehicle.
Michael Judge age 18 is charged with Financial Transaction Card Theft, Possession of Stolen Motor Vehicle and Breaking into Motor Vehicle.
Juvenile 1 is charged with Possession of Stolen Vehicle and Breaking into Motor Vehicle.
Juvenile 2 is charged with Possession of Stolen Vehicle, Unlawful Carry of a Firearm and Possession of a Stolen Firearm.
Juvenile 3 is charged with Possession of Stolen Vehicle and Breaking into Motor Vehicle.

Armed Robbery Arrest

Mount Pleasant, SC – On August 18, 2023 officers from the Mount Pleasant Police Department arrested Andre Myers along with one juvenile and charged both with one count of Armed Robbery and one count of Possession of a Weapon During the Commission of a Violent Crime stemming from the armed robberies at Circle K on Hwy 41 and Five Guys on Hwy 17.

Both Myers and the juvenile were taken into custody without incident.

Police Department launches online reporting portal

The Mount Pleasant Police Department has launched an online reporting system. This system is available for the public to make a police report online for situations that have occurred in the jurisdictional boundaries of the Town of Mount Pleasant such as animal complaints, fraud, harassment, lost property, theft, and vandalism. The online reporting system is not for reporting emergencies. To report any emergencies or in progress situations the public should use 9-1-1. Incidents involving firearms, personal injury, or other in progress situations will not be accepted by the online reporting system.

Once the portal is accessed the person making the report will be prompted to answer a series of questions to ensure that their report meets the criteria for the system. After answering the questions the report can be made online. After making the report you will see the phrase “your online police report has been submitted” and a police report number will be given to you for reference. All cases filed through the online system will be reviewed by a police department employee. If further investigation is needed, an on duty police office may reach out to the person making the report.

Welcome to the Mount Pleasant Police Department Family!

Chief Arnold swore in three officers this morning. Please welcome Officer Jalon Williams, Officer Brayden Knudsen, and Officer Dayne York. We look forward to having them as a part of our community. 

Officer Jalon T. Williams is from Columbia, SC. He graduated from the Citadel with a B.S. in Sports Management and has started a master’s degree in Sports Administration at Hampton University.

Officer Brayden Knudsen is from Harlan Iowa and served in the United States Marine Corps. After his service he graduated from the University of Iowa with a B.A. in Criminology, Law and Justice with a minor in Arabic Language and Literature.

Officer Dayne York comes to us with twenty three years of law enforcement experience. He is from Knoxville Tennessee and has a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts with a minor in Anthropology

Mount Pleasant Christmas Light Parade

 

The Town of Mount Pleasant’s annual Christmas Light Parade will take place on Sunday December 13^th at 5:30 p.m. The parade will begin after a firework display and travel down Coleman Blvd. from Whilden Street to Patriots Point Road. We are expecting traffic on Coleman Blvd. and surrounding areas to be heavier than normal starting around 3:00 p.m.  The timeline for road closures are as follows:

4:00 p.m.– Coleman Blvd. from Pherigo Street to Whilden Street will be closed

5:00 p.m. – Coleman Blvd. from Whilden Street to Patriots Point Road will be closed

We are looking forward to a fun, safe event and hope to have Coleman Blvd. opened back up around 9:00 p.m. Traffic coming into Mount Pleasant over the Ravenel Bridge will be routed onto Highway 17 North.

Investigation Update

 

Mount Pleasant, S.C. - The Mount Pleasant Police Department completed the investigation into the rumor of a threat of violence at Lucy Beckham High School. Interviews with multiple individuals involved uncovered no threat of violence towards the school. The investigation concluded that this was a disagreement between individuals via Snapchat. 

 We want to thank everyone who reached out to us with information about this issue! The Mount Pleasant Police Department takes all incidents such as these seriously and investigates them to the fullest extent. Students are encouraged to report any circumstance they feel could endanger their safety or the safety of others. These reports should be reported by telling an administrator/teacher/parent, calling dispatch at 843-743-7200, or taken anonymously through our smartphone application. If the threat is considered imminent, please call 911.

Veterans Day

Chief Arnold held a ceremony recognizing our sworn and civilian Veterans. We appreciate their service to our United States Military. Chief Arnold also approved and issued uniform pins for officers and civilians to wear in recognition of their service.

Mrs. Kerry Foy was selected as the Civilian of the Quarter for Quarter Three 2021! This quarter Mrs. Foy has accepted more responsibility with the department’s report writing system along with her daily responsibilities of leading our records office and all that comes with a 24/7/365 department. Mrs. Foy has been able to adjust to pandemic protocols and any challenge that came her way with compassion. Mrs. Foy’s contribution to the records office supports the police department and keeps us running efficiently.

SPO Kyle Alexander was selected as the Officer of the Quarter for Quarter Three 2021! This quarter SPO Alexander has taken on more responsibility in our police explorer program. Over the quarter SPO Alexander coordinated a schedule for the program which allowed the members to learn a variety of law enforcement topics. SPO Alexander was able to coordinate with outside agencies and bring the explorers out to community events. The group participated in the Sweetgrass Festival, Coffee with a Cop, the 9/11 Silent Walk, and the Cooper River Bridge Run. As a post advisor, SPO Alexander has been a big part of the success of the explore program.

Sergeant Trevor Simmons was selected as the Supervisor of the Quarter for Quarter Three 2021! This quarter SGT Simmons was thrown several administrative issues regarding our vehicles and building. He always had a plan and corrected the wiring on vehicles, security to our building, and serving in the Emergency Operations Center for the Cooper River Bridge Run. No matter what was thrown his way, SGT Simmons handled his duties without delay and efficiently.

We were honored to participate in two events this weekend to remember and honor those lost on September 11^th, 2001.

The 8^th annual 9/11 Silent Walk had a group come together as first responders and a community to walk 5.7 miles across the Ravenel Bridge ending on the flight deck of the USS Yorktown.

We came together with our Fire Department and formed TEAM MOUNT PLEASANT to participate in the 10^th annual 9/11 Heroes Run for the Travis Manion Foundation. This year we created a new shirt and had 36 participants which was our biggest group yet!

Promotions

Earlier this week Chief Arnold promoted Dan Eckert to the rank of sergeant and Tony Winstead to the rank of senior sergeant. 

Sergeant Eckert will be assigned as a field operations supervisor. 

The senior sergeant recognition comes after serving for ten years as a sergeant. Congratulations to Senior Sergeant Winstead. We appreciate your continued leadership!

Life Saving Recognition

PFC Cooper Upson was presented with a live saving award by Chief Arnold. Over the summer, PFC Upson responded to a call involving an unresponsive person who was experiencing an overdose. PFC Upson arrived quickly and administered Narcan to the person. After receiving Narcan, the person regained consciousnesses and was able to be taken for further treatment.

Officer Richard Rebbert and Officer Brayden Knudsen were sworn into the agency by Chief Arnold today. Officer Rebbert holds a master’s degree in Criminology from George Mason University and Officer Knudsen holds a bachelor’s degree in Criminology from the University of Iowa. Please welcome our new officers to our community.

Open Carry with Training Act

On Sunday August 15th the Open Carry with Training Act goes into effect. Here are some things we want the public to know:

-South Carolina joins 45 other states which allow open carry of a firearm.

-People with current concealed weapons permits will legally be able to open carry their firearms in public.

-Current restrictions on where the firearms can and cannot be carried will still apply including posted “NO CONCEALABLE FIREARMS” signs.

-If you wish to open carry, you must have a current concealed weapons permit and the firearm needs to be less than 12 inches in length along its greatest dimension.

-The same number of individuals who were able to legally carry a firearm concealed before August 15th will now be able to carry a firearm openly. These are the same firearms that were already legally being carried except now they will be visible.
