Police Chief Urges Residents to Exercise Extreme Caution on the Roadways

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (January 4, 2018) - Mount Pleasant Police Chief Carl Ritchie is urging residents of Mount Pleasant to stay home tonight as public safety staff continues to mitigate the ice impacts of Winter Storm Grayson. "A National Weather Service Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for our area until tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. and calls for extreme caution on our roadways," he said "Despite a bit of melting today, temps will quickly fall below freezing this evening and overnight. Any wet stops on the roadways will refreeze, causing treacherous travel conditions due to black ice. Avoid travel if possible! If you must travel , slow down and keep food and water in your vehicle in case of emergency." 

If you must travel:

• Always wear a seat belt.
• Slow down. Slower speeds, slower acceleration, slower steering and slower braking all are required in winter driving conditions.
• Drop it and drive. Put down the handheld devices.
• Avoid using cruise control in snow and ice.
• Watch out for black ice on roads that appear clear but can be treacherous.
• Be especially careful approaching intersections, ramps, bridges and shady areas. All are prone to icing.
• Carry a cell phone and a car charger in case of emergency.
