Officers Visit Children's Hospital

Not too long ago we learned of a little boy who had been at the Medical University of South Carolina Children's Hospital for several months. We also found out that he is a huge fan of Paw Patrol! Knowing all of that, Team 2 decided to head over for the little guy's birthday!

Officers brought a Paw Patrol balloon (made by Ofc. Jean), a few Paw Patrol gifts, and spent some time playing UNO (his favorite game)!

It was an amazing time and officers are staying in touch as he heals! Bryson is an incredibly strong and brave young man! It was an honor and a privilege to meet him!

Mount Pleasant Police Release Safe Campus Form

Mount Pleasant, SC – The Mount Pleasant Police Department added a section to their free smartphone application called Safe Campus. This form allows anyone to anonymously send information to the police department regarding behavior that could be considered harmful to the school, a student, or a staff member. Cario Middle School created a form two years ago that was the inspiration to expand this service to all students in Mount Pleasant.

“Students can report bullying, threats of violence, threats of vandalism, or any criminal act that could threaten the safety of one of their campuses,” says Chief Carl Ritchie. “They can also report anything on their campus that may be a safety concern such as a fire extinguisher missing, an unlocked gate, or a door that is not properly secured.”

Users have the option of furnishing the police department with their name and contact information but it is not required to submit the information. “The only information required is a description of what they saw or heard,” says Inspector Chip Googe. “You have the option to remain anonymous.”

Towards the bottom of the form there is an option to attach a photo with your submission. This is useful if someone sees a photograph or threat online as they can then send a screenshot of the harmful behavior or threat. The form is sent immediately to the School Resource Officers, and their supervisors, for follow-up.

“This is a great example of the strong partnership between two outstanding community assets; our volunteer parents at schools and our police department,” says Council Member Kevin Cunnane. “Their commitment to keeping our children and teachers safe is second to none! I am thankful for the willingness of these two groups to expand upon a successful program at one school and make it town wide.”

If the user is reporting behavior that is likely to cause harm to someone in the immediate future, please call 911 or 843-743-7200 to report the information. “We do not want this form to be used if someone is currently harming someone or if the harm is likely to happen within a short time frame,” says Inspector Googe. “Calling 911, alerting a school administrator, or calling the police dispatch line are the best options for situations that are imminent.”

Mount Pleasant Police Receives 9th Reaccreditation

Mount Pleasant, SC – The Mount Pleasant Police Department received their 9th accreditation award, with excellence, on July 28th during a formal hearing in Grand Rapids, Michigan. For this reaccreditation cycle, the Mount Pleasant Police Department participated in a Gold Standard Assessment. This type of assessment focuses primarily on processes and outcomes associated with standards specific to agency policies.  Assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) reviewed the policies, procedures, processes, and outcomes of the Mount Pleasant Police Department in April of this year.

To receive accreditation status, the Mount Pleasant Police Department needed to comply with 484 standards that focus on all facets of the agency. One of the criteria to receive reaccreditation with excellence is to have at least 90% compliance with standards that are not mandatory. The Mount Pleasant Police Department carries 100% compliance with these standards.

“Participation in the accreditation process ensures we are providing the highest level of police service to our community,” says Chief Ritchie. “Our process is so successful because of the commitment given from everyone in our organization. Line level officers up through our command staff believe in this endeavor. Having our processes examined by an outside agency shows that we are in pursuit of accountability and transparency.”

CALEA accreditation is a voluntary process which includes a self-assessment, an onsite assessment, community input, officer interviews, and a formal hearing in front of a review committee. The Mount Pleasant Police Department first became accredited in 1992 and was given the Meritorious Award in 2009 after having been accredited continuously for over 15 years. According to CALEA only 5% of all agencies in the nation are accredited.
